Michael Young finally comes through for Rangers

DETROIT -- Michael Young's struggles in the postseason has been a popular topic as manager Ron Washington keeps insisting on running Young out in the cleanup spot.

On one hand, you can understand Washington's rationale. Young hit .338 in the regular season and will probably get some MVP votes. You don't suddenly move on from your cleanup hitter after a few bad games, but Young was especially helpless this October, collecting just three singles in 29 plate appearances, plus two walks. That's simply horrid production from an integral spot in the lineup.

"Michael has done a great job for us there, simply because he hits a spell where things aren't going well, for me to make that type of change would be panic," Washington said prior to the game. In essence, he's largely right. It's important for players to have a chance to play out of their slumps, and so far in October, it hadn't bitten Texas to keep Young in the cleanup spot. But things looked to be changing Tuesday when Detroit jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind the commanding arm of Rick Porcello.

"We are talking about Michael Young. Seven years of 200 hits," Washington said.

The skipper's confidence in Young finally paid off in the sixth inning after he had already gone 0 for 2 and looked silly on a fourth-inning strikeout. With Elvis Andrus on first base and two runners in, Young ripped a single to center field to plate Andrus with the go-ahead run and stun Tigers fans. Suddenly, Young had put Texas in the lead with a great chance of extending the series lead three games to one. It was Young's first RBI in his last 30 at-bats, but it was a major RBI that could be the turning point of the series.

"Today could be the day that Michael Young stops all this talk about him hitting in the fourth slot and hitting .111," Washington cautioned. He proved to be correct.

Michael Young saves best for last

ARLINGTON -- The endless stream of questions directed toward Ron Washington about dropping Michael Young from the cleanup spot in the batting order have ceased.
So have the queries about Young's lackluster postseason batting average and production -- and they aren't returning anytime soon.
Not after Young showed us, once again, that he's the franchise's best pure hitter, which is saying quite a bit considering the Texas Rangers have employed Julio FrancoJuan Gonzalez and steroid-using Rafael Palmeiro and Alex Rodriguez.
[+] EnlargeMichael Young
AP Photo/Eric GayMichael Young came to life in Game 6, delivering two two-run doubles in the Rangers' nine-run third inning and adding a home run in the seventh.
Young saved his finest moment of what had been a dreary postseason for when the Rangers needed it most.
He delivered a pair of two-run doubles in the pivotal third inning and added a homer in the seventh inning Saturday to lead the Rangers -- as he should as the face of the franchise -- into the World Series with a 15-5 butt-kicking of the Detroit Tigers to win the series 4-2.
"He's the spirit of this club," Washington said of Young. "I know earlier in the playoffs he wasn't producing, but he showed the quality professional and the quality person that he is.
"He came through when we needed him most. It seemed as though he saved his best for last. As far as I'm concerned tonight, he put us on his back."
No doubt.
After Young's three-hit, two-run, five-RBI performance in Game 6, it's probably hard for most folks to remember he's been abject much of the postseason.
Then consider this: Young's dramatic performance raised his ALCS average to .214.
Unbelievable.
Then again, in Young's first seven games of the playoffs he totaled just three hits for a minuscule .111 batting average. After Young went 0-for-4 in a 5-2 loss in Game 3, Washington endured question after question about dropping the unproductive star in the batting order.
Washington refused, saying it would be a panic move.
"Wash believes in me," said Young, "and I believe in him."
Young answered an equal number of questions about his slump. Although the easiest way to receive a stern look from Young is to mention the word slump.
He doesn't believe in them.
At all.
Young thinks the next at-bat has nothing to do with his previous at-bat. Or the next at-bat.
Each trip to the plate is an experience unto itself.
No more, no less.
It's kind of hard to argue with a dude who has six career 200-hit seasons -- he had 213 hits this season -- and owns the franchise record for hits. Don't forget, Young hit .338 this season, tying for second in the AL.
Besides, Young's hot streak had been slowly building with three hits and two RBIs in the previous two games.
"I just got some results," Young said of his Game 6 performance. "I believe in my approach to hitting. I'm scratching and clawing up there, trying to make sure I have good at-bats."
Trailing 2-0 in the third, Elvis Andrus walked and Josh Hamilton looped an arching single to left, bringing Young to the plate.
He ripped Max Scherzer's first pitch, a slider, into the left field corner, where hobbledDelmon Young took so long to secure the ball that Hamilton scored from first to tie the score 2-2.
The Rangers were still in the third inning, though the lead had already swelled to 7-2, when Young batted again after Jim Leyland intentionally walked Hamilton to load the bases with two out.
Young, swinging at the first pitch again, hit a fastball down the right field line, scoring Ian Kinsler and Andrus as the Rangers took a 9-2 lead.
As the crowd erupted and Leyland made his way to the mound for his third pitching change of the inning, Young stood on second base with a raised fist.
End of series.
For good measure, Young homered onto Green's Hill in the seventh. And it seemed fitting that he recorded the game's final out on a flare in right field just beyond the infield dirt.
As he snagged the ball, Young thrust his index finger into the air and sprinted to the infield between the mound and second base, where he leaped into the waiting arms of Andrus,Adrian Beltre and Esteban German.
It was time to celebrate.

'Die Hard 5' Gets A Title: 'A Good Day To Die Hard'

After a few years of speculation, John McClane is going to die hard another day. On Wednesday (October 12), Fox announced that the fifth entry in the series will be called "A Good Day to Die Hard" and is set for release on February 14, 2013.

As Bruce Willis told MTV News' Josh Horowitz while promoting "Cop Out" last year, the next adventure for McClane takes him international. According to the announcement, McClane heads to Russia to find his son, who has found himself in trouble. The role has yet to be cast, but the search has begun for a young actor to play the action icon's son."A Good Day to Die Hard" begins shoot this January under director John Moore of "Max Payne" and the "Omen" remake. Willis confirmed to MTV News last October that the script by Skip Woods was finished and undergoing some rewrites, saying that it was "probably going to happen."
A
side from what was mentioned in the initial announcement, little else is known about the plot or cast. "The Thing" star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who played McClane's daughter Lucy in "Live Free and Die Hard," recently told IndieWire that she didn't think she would appear in the fifth entry. "I'm assuming I will not be [in that] because I have not heard anything," Winstead said.

Justin Long told MTV News something similar, saying he was interested but didn't think he would be asked back. "I didn't get a good feeling that I was going to be a part of this imminent 'Die Hard,' " Long said. "I would love to get my hands on it."

Die Hard 5 given a name and a 2013 release date

It seems as though the Die Hard franchise is ready to take the series to the next level. In a strange move Fox Filmed Entertainment CEOTom Rothman made an exclusive announcement about the fifth Die Hard movie on Jim Rome’s sports radio show. The movie will of course start Bruce Willis as John McClane, and will be titled A Good Day to Die Hard. Rothman states that Rome is a huge Die Hard fan so he wanted to make the exclusive announcement on Rome’s show instead of to a normal news outlet.

Filming of the movie is set to start in January and already has the release date of February 14, 2013. This might make Willis a very busy man seeing how he is said to have a major role in theExpendables sequel. For the first time in franchise history McClane will be going international as this film is set in Russia.

The story revolves around McClane going out to Moscow to attempt to sweet talk some Russian cops into releasing his son from jail. Of course nothing goes to plan in a Die Hard movie and somehow McCain has to save the world from some terrorists. There is still no word on who will be playing McClane’s son in the movie, or how big of a role the son will play in the movie.

Willis handpicked the director of the film, John Moore who directed Max Payne, The Omen, and Behind Enemy Lines. Skip Woods wrote the screenplay and also wrote the over the top action film A-Team so he should be right at home with a Die Hard movie.

2013 is already shaping up to be a big movie year with the reboot of Superman pegged for a June 14, 2013 release date. Seeing how the Die Hard franchise started out saving a building and most recently McClane was tasked with saving the United States we can only assume that the sixth movie will feature Bruce Willis in space saving the solar system?

Chris Tucker Facing Foreclosure on Mansion

Actor and comedian Chris Tucker is facing foreclosure of his multi-million dollar Florida mansion, according to court papers filed earlier this week.

The star of the “Rush Hour” trilogy and the comedy favorite “Friday” purchased the 10,000-square-foot lakefront home in 2007 for $6 million. The hefty home purchase was made just before the housing market took a nosedive later that year.

SunTrust Bank reportedly filed papers against the actor in Circuit Court in Florida’s Lake County. The bank says that Tucker owes over $4.4 million. However the county property appraiser has the home currently assessed at $1.6 million, according to the AP.

According to the Orlando Sentinel newspaper Tucker’s estate is located in the Bella Collina development, a nearly 2000 acre community with waterfront homes and estates that overlook a massive golf course.

Tucker’s home reportedly features five bedrooms, three fireplaces, and a personal spa. An outdoor kitchen overlooks a swimming pool, and the basement is fit to resemble a pirate ship, according to the Sentinel.

Though his last film, 2007's “Rush Hour 3? was a sizable hit, taking in over $140 million at the domestic box office, he hasn’t been featured in a film since. Earlier this year Tucker returned to stand up comedy, touring theaters across the U.S.

Former Hedge Fund Tycoon Rajaratnam Receive The Stiffest Sentence For Insider-Trading

Galleon Group LLC’s Raj Rajaratnam is sentenced to 11 years on Thursday for masterminding the biggest hedge-fund insider trading scheme in U.S. history, that stretched from Silicon Valley to Wall Street.
U.S. District Judge Richard Holwell in Manhattan presided over the jury trial in which Rajaratnam was convicted of 14 counts of securities fraud and conspiracy. It was the stiffest sentence ever given for trading in the stock market using confidential corporate information.

The longest insider-trading sentence before Galleon was 10 years, given to former Credit Suisse Group AG banker Hafiz Muhammad Zubair Naseem, who was convicted in 2008 of leading a $7.8 million scheme.

Sri Lankan born Rajaratnam's rapid flight to billionaire hedge fund chief was undone with the arrest of a former Atherton resident who became a federal informant.
The informant, Roomy Khan, had been caught faxing confidential information to Galleon in 1998 when she worked at Intel. She pleaded guilty in 2002. Caught again in 2007, Khan agreed to cooperate in an investigation of Galleon.

Rajaratnam, 54, was at the center of a seven- year conspiracy to trade on inside information from corporate executives, bankers, consultants, traders and directors of public companies.
He is fined $10 million and was also ordered to forfeit $53.8 million in illegal profits by the U.S. District Judge Richard J. Holwell, his "crimes and the scope of his crimes reflect a virus in our business culture that needs to be eradicated." Said Howell.

In court papers, the government urged Holwell to make an example of Rajaratnam, saying he "represents the worst of illegal insider trading." Prosecutors compared him to Enron Corp.'s Jeffrey Skilling and WorldCom Inc.'s Bernard Ebbers, convicted in what prosecutors called "the worst of accounting frauds," and Bernard Madoff, the man behind history's biggest Ponzi scheme.
Rajaratnam's lawyer has asked for leniency based on medical conditions he said would be life-threatening if he's sent to prison.

Also caught up in the case Danielle Chiesi, the former beauty queen turned stock trader sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail for her role in the biggest insider-dealing case in decades. She pleaded guilty to three counts of conspiracy to commit securities fraud arising from an insider trading scheme.
Chiesi, 45, was the former confidante of hedge fund billionaire Raj Rajaratnam, founder of the Galleon hedge fund.

Alan Kaufman, her lawyer, argued that Chiesi, said she was the victim of a "toxic" sexual relationship with Mark Kurland, her former boss and lover at trader New Castle Partners.
Chiesi was the 10th person to be sentenced after an insider-dealing investigation that has secured 46 guilty pleas and convictions.

The investigation caught many prominent valley figures. Among them were Anil Kumar, of Saratoga, a McKinsey & Co. executive who gave Rajaratnam a tip about an Advanced Micro Devices acquisition; Rajiv Goel, of Los Altos, an Intel executive who furnished advance word on Intel's earnings and an acquisition of broadband company Clearwire; and Ali Harari, of San Jose, an Atheros Communications executive who was accused of divulging confidential information. Richard Choo-Beng Lee and Ali Far, who ran the short-lived Spherix hedge fund in San Jose.

'Monster' director Jenkins takes on 'Thor 2'

Hollywood has signed up its first female director for a major superhero movie.

Marvel Studios announced Thursday that Patty Jenkins will direct "Thor 2," the sequel to last summer's hit that is due in theaters Nov. 15, 2013.

Jenkins is best-known for writing and directing 2003's "Monster," which earned Charlize Theron the best-actress Academy Award. Her credits also include episodes of "Entourage" and "Arrested Development."

Chris Hemsworth will reprise his title role in "Thor 2" as the Norse god of thunder, with co-stars Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddlestonalso returning.

The first "Thor," directed by Kenneth Branagh, took in $448 million worldwide.

Another female filmmaker, Lexi Alexander, made the lower-budgeted Marvel movie "The Punisher: War Zone" in 2008. But Jenkins is the first woman to direct a blockbuster superhero franchise.

Doctor: Drug 'cocktail' killed Michael Jackson

Dr. Conrad Murray's use of a cocktail of drugs on Michael Jackson as he struggled to fall asleep on the day he died was a "recipe for disaster" and ultimately caused his death, a UCLA sleep therapy expert testified Thursday.
Dr. Nader Kamangar described Murray's treatment as "unethical, disturbing and beyond comprehension."
Under questioning by Murray's attorney, J. Michael Flanagan, the witness was asked to tell jurors what he knew about the events of June 25, 2009, the day of Jackson's death.

"To summarize, Mr. Jackson was receiving very inappropriate therapy in a home setting, receiving very potent therapies without monitoring," Kamangar said.

He said diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan) and midazolam (Versed) were given to the sleepless star during a 10-hour period throughout the night and morning.

"This cocktail was a recipe for disaster," Kamangar said.
Noting the addition of propofol (Dipravan), a powerful anesthetic used in surgeries, Flanagan asked: "Could this have caused death?'
"Absolutely," Kamangar said. "Absolutely."
Authorities say Murray gave Jackson a fatal dose of propofol. Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.
The witness, one of the experts who evaluated Murray's actions for the California Medical Board, expressed dismay about the drugs Murray gave the pop star, his failure to immediately call for help, and his lack of monitoring and record-keeping.
Murray was unable to produce any written records on his treatment of Jackson, Kamangar noted.

"It is an egregious violation of the standard of care when you are using sedatives like propofol and you are not writing it down," Kamangar answered.

Kamangar was the third prosecution expert to criticize the conduct of Murray. He said his first mistake was using propofol to treat insomnia, calling it an unacceptable application of the drug.

He said Jackson's demand for the drug — the subject of previous testimony — was not a sufficient reason to give it. He also suggested Murray should have done a physical examination, taken a history from his patient about his insomnia, and called in other medical experts if necessary to evaluate the problem.

"The most important thing he should have done is call for help," Kamangar said.

He said Murray's interview with police made it clear that he waited too long to call for an ambulance when he found Jackson not breathing.

On Wednesday, Murray's defense team announced they were dropping a claim that was the centerpiece of their case — that Jackson swallowed additional propofol when Murray was out of the room. Flanagan did not bring up self-dosing on Thursday.

Before court recessed, the prosecution called to the stand Dr. Steven Shafer, one of the nation's leading experts on propofol. However, he did not get into his substantive testimony before trial recessed until Monday because Shafer had a schedule conflict.

Shafer was expected to be the final prosecution witness in the case. The defense has a colleague of Shafer's waiting to take the stand.

Shafer helped craft guidelines for appropriate propofol dosing for sedation that is included in the packaging of every bottle that is sold.

Murray could face up to four years behind bars and the loss of his medical license if convicted.

DAVID ORTIZ: Some Red Sox Players Didn't Care About Winning

David OrtizThe Red Sox have had a rough couple of months, and if you ask David Ortiz, it might be because some of his teammates just didn't care.
Ortiz appeared on a local Boston radio show and was asked if there were players in the Red Sox clubhouse that did not care.
"Probably, yeah. It probably happened, but seeing [that] … as an owner and manager of the team, you keep that in mind for yourself. You guys know the guys who care. That’s the thing. People know.".
We have already seen the beginning of the fallout with the departure of manager Terry Francona. And if it's true that some players didn't care, it will be interesting to see which players follow Francona out the door.

Rashida Jones Answers Playboy's 20Q

Here’s what the 35-year-old Parks and Recreation actress had to share:
On who makes her laugh: “Aziz Ansari is so funny, though nobody thinks he’s funnier than Aziz. He’ll ruin a take because he’s laughing at himself. I love that man. The Inappropriate Yoga Guy from YouTube is such an asshole in the funniest way. I also love the guy behind the My Son Is Gay? video. Crazy fun.”
On acting on Parks & Rec, three movies this year, and having gone to Harvard: “It’s just who I am, I guess. I came out of the womb reading books and thinking about my next project. I’m a born nerd. There’s also this thing of wanting to make your parents proud.”
On her favorite memory of Michael Jackson: “Michael basically grew up with us, so I have a million memories of him. We were at each other’s house all the time. He was definitely a little bit of an alien, for sure, and when I was young, it felt as if he was my age, not 18 years older, but with just a little bit more pep. Later, we’d go out on the town together. He always wore those surgical masks. Once, my sister, Michael, Emmanuel Lewis and I got in a car with Super Soakers and went by a movie theater and supersoaked the hell out of people waiting in line. They had no idea they’d just been supersoaked by the King of Pop.”

‘I’ll drive an auto with machine guns’

Stand-up comedian Aziz Ansari will leave you rolling on the floor with his deadpan humour, especially when the US-based funny man of Indian origin comes to unravelling his Bollywood aspirations. “I’d love to do a Bollywood action movie. Maybe, it could be about me driving an auto that has been

souped up with machine guns and let’s hope that I’m fine with it,” the comic turned-actor tells us over telephone from LA.

Ask if the 28-year-old has seen any Indian movies and Ansari, who “speaks a little bit of Tamil at home” says, “I’ve seen some Tamil movies with my parents when I was a kid, but I don’t remember the names.”

As of now, the actor is busy bagging kudos for his role as actor Jesse Eisenberg’s Indian pal Chet in their latest flick, 30 Minutes or Less, which hit Indian screens on Friday.

A self-confessed workaholic, Ansari says he is unaware about the politics in the country, but has his own take on dealing with the problems here, if he was ever made a political leader in India. “I’m not really a political person. I’d probably bail out of my job and run around finding some good chicken korma and idli-appam,” he says.

So, does he ever visit India? “Oh yes, I’ve been there several times and I’m coming back in December to see the family. But I have to take a (exploring) trip to India because usually when I come, I end up visiting my family all the time. So maybe, this time, I’ll try and become a tourist to explore the country,” he says.
